Long live the deep side part

A recap of hair trends from NYFW F/W ’14

This recent New York Fashion Week was a relief for low maintenance guys and girls. Comfort is key this coming Spring with many of the luxury lines featuring big, comfy knitwear, tailored sweatpants, and shapeless dresses. Hair trends mirrored this with lots of very wearable styles. Of course a certain level of theatrics are to be expected from designers like Marc Jacobs, Thom Browne, and Hood by Air, but overall ladies can rejoice in chic, simple, everyday looks.

An unsurprising SS14 rollover style was the deep side part. From big timers like Vera Wang to game changers like Proenza Schouler, the deep side part seemed to be the base style for more inspired half/updos and fallback style for the less distracting beauty looks. Its popularity has come and gone but the fact remains that this sort of preppy, sort of mod look is timeless and thus always in style.

Nonoo’s show as well as Elizabeth and James’s presentation gave a very feminine version two ways: one updo and one down. Their wispy strands and loose waves make for a couple of simple and romantic styles. Others took the opposite direction with very slick, at times severe, deep side parted hair, often pulled entirely out of the way as with the show by Delpozo and the always masculine bent looks by Alexander Wang. Many show and presentation looks, like J.Crew, Pedro Del Hierro Madrid, and Richard Chai Love, fell comfortably between feminine flare and masculine structure. The best part about this apparent staple is how easily these looks can be done at home (some texturizing here, some flattening there).

One of the more avant garde trends to note is the slightly greased look a la Christopher Kane, Brian Lichtenberg, or Lie Sang Bong, this style being far less easily pulled off then that of another striking trend: the mixed texture. Noon by Noor and the down hair looks from Marissa Webb championed mixed texture with styles that were haute and easily pulled-off for the street fashionista. Again, three cheers for wearability.

The overarching trend to note is not the presence but the absence of big hair and complex updos. While long locks are still the norm on the runway, we are seeing far less luscious curls and princess-like braiding. While more costume-y styles will always have their place (see Rodarte FW14) low key looks reign supreme. This season continues the shift toward natural looks, so girls with painfully stick-straight hair or others with a tendency of frizz should enjoy while it lasts. With a little shine serum and a part a little farther to the left or straight down the middle, you can be just as chic as the catwalk girls (minus the thousand dollar duds of course). The focus here is to let your natural beauty shine through, a look we’ve always loved.
